SIR David Attenborough has revealed his next TV venture is a “soap opera” about animals in Africa.

The programme will chronicle three years of ups and downs in the lives of various beasts.

Sir David, 91, said: “It is a new series from the BBC Natural History unit and it is a brilliant idea.”

The concept is to follow families of animals such as lions, chimpanzees and wild dogs.

Sir David added: “We don’t know what is going to happen but whatever does happen we will be there and we’ll show it to you and we’ll tell you the truth.

“I am not going to go into detail but I can tell you there will be some fairly dark moments and we won’t tidy it up.

“This is a new concept and I am privileged to have been be asked to write some of the commentary.”

Speaking at a Bafta masterclass in London, the veteran broadcaster also said the public’s move to stop using plastic after watching his Blue Planet 2 series was a step in the right direction.

Sir David said: “If we have woken up, it is only the beginning and we have a long way to go.

“We have made a real mess of the world. We really, really have.

“We have got to do something about it.

“I am grateful politicians are taking notice. This is serious.”
