BEING AT CELTIC IS A LABOURER OF LOVE FOR ME

CELTC v ROSS COUNTY Bain’s ready to lay foundations down at Parkhead after working as a builder in part-time days at Alloa

- GARY RALSTON

SCOTT BAIN used to build timber frame kits for houses but he’s refusing to quote on a glass ceiling at Celtic.

The Hoops keeper insists there are no barriers to progress at Parkhead after shining in the spotlight following his loan move from Dundee.

The 26-year-old former joiner is out of contract at the end of the season and is keen to extend his Parkhead stay for the next few campaigns.

Bain proved his worth when he rose to the challenge of starring in an Old Firm fixture earlier this month, five months on from his last top-team appearance for Dundee following a bust-up with Neil McCann.

Scotland No.1 Craig Gordon is on the way back from injury and Brendan Rodgers can also turn to his former Swansea standout Dorus de Vries but Bain has fought his whole career to prove his worth.

His journey has taken him from Aberdeen to Celtic via stints at Elgin and Alloa, including a spell as a manual grafter with his old man’s joinery business. So nothing thrown up by football will ever faze him.

Bain said: “I used to work on the sites from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

“It was mostly in Edinburgh but on a Tuesday and Thursday I’d go to Alloa and train from 7pm to 9.30pm. I’d be back home at 10.30pm, go to sleep and up the next day for work again.

“It stood me in good stead. I was a labourer for the first year and the second year I helped two boys with building kits for houses.

“I really enjoyed it – apart from the winter. My worst moment came three days in when we did the big joinery job on a Cala Homes site.

“They were five and six-bedroom houses – and the forklift driver brought over a pallet of plasterboard sheets, 72 sheets on a pallet.

“I had to load them in the house. I loaded them in and thought I was done for the day. Then the forklift driver came back and told me there were another FOUR pallets to be sorted.

“At that point I was thinking, ‘Nah, this isn’t for me.’

“The last few weeks have been mad. I stay in Edinburgh and it’s not as big as Glasgow but even through there a lot of people recognise you and stop to speak in the street. Social media’s a big thing too. The support I’ve had from the fans has been incredible.

“I want to stay here. I love it. At Celtic I can reach my full potential. I don’t think there’s a ceiling at this club, you can go as high as you can possibly go with the support of the staff, the manager, Stephen Woods and all the other keepers I’m working with.

“I’ve only had quick conversations about a deal here and there. It’s still at an early stage.

“It’s just about building on the last two matches and trying to get as much game time as possible.”

Bain is set to continue between the sticks for today’s visit of Ross County but will not feature against parent club Dundee in midweek as a result of the gentlemen’s agreement between teams who take loan players.
