NINA NESBITT

NINA Nesbitt has revealed she has been diagnosed with the metabolism of a 12-year old after looking into why she struggles to put on weight.

The Edinburgh-born singersongwriter, who first burst on to the pop scene in 2013 and used to date Ed Sheeran, has long been a victim of social media trolls who accused her of being anorexic.

But Nina has now discovered she suffers from a high metabolism, which doctors revealed should belong to a girl half her age.

Nina, 23, said: “About six months ago, I was put on a machine that measures everything and told my metabolism is in keeping with a 12-year-old’s metabolism.

“I always get people telling me that I need to eat and that I’ve got anorexia. That’s a serious condition. You can’t just say that to someone or put it on their social media.

“I genuinely have no eating problem. I eat so much food. I think there’s a lot of girls who are similar to me.

“I can’t put on weight, even though I eat so much and I’m not saying that in a good way because I love curves and I love carbs too.

“Sadly, people assume that I am happy because I am so skinny.”

Nina also claims one of the biggest events in Scotland’s music calendar proved a nightmare because of her weight issues.

Nina, who collected the Evolution Award at the Scottish Music Awards last November, had glammed up for the occasion, a decision she now regrets.

She said: “I wore a dress to the awards and some people said on social media that I looked amazing – but if they knew how I felt in that dress they would have been surprised.

“I felt so self-conscious the whole night. I felt uncomfortable. I just didn’t enjoy wearing it. It was all because I wish that I was curvier.”

Nina, who recently played shows at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, added: “I have been here in the States for four weeks and have eaten like a pig. The portion sizes are huge, but it makes no difference.”

She plans to spend three months in America, where Spotify have identified her as one of three female artists they want to break big in the States in 2018.

She has taken part in the first collaborative recording for the music streaming giants to coincide with the song site’s Women’s History Month, and is on tour with Jake Bugg across the US.

Spotify have picked three female artists they plan to break in America this year – Nina, Sasha Sloane, who wrote Camila Cabello’s hit Never Be The Same, and Charlotte Lawrence.

“We had to write the song together, called Psychopath,” Nina said. “The song is about empowering females and coming together. A few years ago, there could only be so many female artists because we were in competition with each other. Now it’s all about helping each other.”

The trio have also recorded a reworked version of Cindy Lauper’s 1983 hit Girls Just Want To Have Fun.

Nina has also revealed she and boyfriend Mike Duce, from the band Lower Than Atlantis, have taken their relationship to the next level. She said: “We just got a house together, which is a big step. It’s quite serious.

“We were together when I was 18 for a year and then we broke up for two years and we’ve been back together for twoand-a-half-years so I feel like we know each other well enough. We’ve now been through enough to buy a house.”

The pair share their London home with Nina’s pet pomeranian Timmy.

She added: “When I got a dog everybody told me not to get one but I have never been away for more than three weeks in my life.

“My mum loves him and looks after him when I’m away and he loves her, which is fine. Now this has kicked off and I’m here in the US for two-and-ahalf months which is harder, so mum has him a bit longer. But he is happy because my mum has a garden.” Nina is
