Heroes ride out to raise cash for charity
THE Hulk was among hundreds of hero bikers who roared around city streets yesterday to help raise money for sick children.
David Maxwell, 34, was the mere mortal underneath the green superhero outfit.
He was participating in the annual Easter Egg Run that has taken place in Glasgow for almost 40 years.
The East Kilbride man joined the ride as his way of saying thank you to staff at Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Children.
David is the dad of courageous four-year-old Mya, who we reported in Saturday’s Record has recovered from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia after a two-year battle.
Mya, whose favourite superhero is the Hulk, spent more than three months in the hospital’s Schiehallion ward and last year watched the bike ride from one of its windows.
Her treatment was successful and, last month, she rang the ward’s bell, as is customary, to mark it coming to an end.
David said: “There are no words to describe what we owe to the Schiehallion ward and staff. It’s such a dark world caring for a sick child and it’s not until you’re in that situation that you realise how special they are. They’re one in a million.”
Kirsten Sinclair, director of fundraising at Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “It is hard to believe the Easter Egg Run is almost 40 years old.
“We’re very grateful to our generous bikers and look forward to celebrating a special anniversary with them in 2019.”
