POLICE searching for a missing student are probing the possibility he fell into a golf course drainage ditch.

It’s feared Duncan Sim, 19, may have ended up tumbling into one of the recently excavated trench es and lain unconscious.

Recent rainfall has given rise to the possibility he may have drowned in a waterfilled culvert.

But maintenance work being carried out on the ditches also raises the grim prospect Duncan was accidentally covered by concrete.

The St Andrews first year chemistry student disappeared after a night out with friends at the Madras Rugby Club on March 14.

CCTV later showed him in the town’s links area. It is the last known sighting of Duncan, who is from the Scottish Borders.

A source close to the investigation said: “There is constant maintenance going on with the drainage systems of the courses.

“There are fears perhaps Duncan, disorientated in the dark, has either fallen in and hurt himself, or gone in to sleep it off and it’s been filled in by an unsuspecting workman.

“There is also the possibility one of the ditches has had water inside and he’s fallen in.”

His parents, Sheila and Gordon, are staying at the university while the search operation continues.

Inspector Gordon Anderson said: “We continue to use all available resources in our efforts to trace Duncan.”
