GREAT SCOTT’S A NATIONAL HERO

-

GAMES golden boy Duncan Scott says his proud parents will be gutted to be going home – despite being put through the wringer Down Under over the past week. The kilted swimming sensation has been the star of Scotland’s Commonwealth campaign by serving up a stunning six medals – nearly a quarter of the team’s growing 28-gong haul. Roared on again from the stands yesterday by mum and dad Joy and Nigel, waving their Slam Dunc saltire, the 20-year-old won silver in the 200m individual medley to add to the gold and four bronzes he’d picked up in the previous four days.

And he was almost in seventh heaven, missing out on a final medal by an agonising 0.36 of a second in the last leg of the relay.

But as he reflected on a stunning week – which has seen the Scots take nine medals in the pool – the humble hero hailed his folks and the rest of the parents who’d made the 10,000-mile trek to support them. And he thanked the team who’d helped put him on the podium six times. He said: “Most of the mums and dads of the swimmers were all sitting up together, having a great time. It’ll be sad to see their faces tomorrow once it’s all over. “I haven’t really spoken to my mum and dad so far, I’ve had my head in competition mode but I know they’ll be immensely proud. “They’ve been holding the banner up, they’ve got their hats on

BY GORDON WADDELL reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk and no matter what the results were they’d have had fun and enjoyed it.

“It’s just been an honour to represent Scotland.

“My teammates in the relay have also been insane – a real pleasure to race alongside.”

Scott arrived at the pool last night with his team-mates decked in out kilts and socks. And while not much has defeated him in the water this week – his sporran almost did.

He joked: “I had plenty of time so I took my time, taking off my sporran and my kilt. The others just took it all off in a oner.

“I’d like to see you try to take a kilt off in front of 10,000 people with a 4x100 medley about to start though.

“Seriously, the boys did it in Glasgow and it was great for us to do it again tonight.”
