Berra: Final five can give us drive for next season

-

CHRISTOPHE BERRA insists Hearts must use their post-split fixtures to lay down a marker for next season.

And the Jambos skipper hopes the thrilling weekend win over Aberdeen is a sign of things to come.

The Tynecastle men look destined to finish in sixth spot and miss out on their target of European football.

But there have been some silver linings this term, including a thumping 4-0 win over champions Celtic and 1-0 triumph over Hibs in the Scottish Cup.

Craig Levein’s men have also gone 14 matches without defeat since their return to the redeveloped Tynecastle in November

Berra said: “We showed what we’re capable of against Aberdeen and it is about reaching that level on a consistent basis.

“We’ll be going into the final five games looking for that and hopefully we put a marker down for next season. The management already have plans well in place and we’ll be ready.” BRYAN GILFILLAN insists Cowdenbeath aren’t afraid of another play-off do or die clash – but hasn’t accepted there will be one.

The Blue Brazil remain seven points adrift at the bottom after Lewis Milne scored either side of Martin Rennie’s finish.

But skipper Gilfillan said: “There are good players in that team, we shouldn’t be worried about the play-offs.

“If we’re there, we’ll just do a job. There’s still a belief we’ll get off bottom.”

Montrose led 26 minutes in when Milne drilled a right foot strike across the keeper.

Just two minutes into the second half, Rennie made it two from the rebound to Cammie Ballantyne’s shot before Milne’s free-kick wrapped it up on the hour.

Montrose are now three points clear of Peterhead at the top and boss Stewart Petrie said: “We’ve exceeded where we thought we’d take the club this season.”
