SCOTTISH actor John Barrowman has hit out at a famous store for failing to donate money to charity after he was stopped from buying clothes for a homeless man.

The 51-year-old took to social media to criticise American brand Target after he tried to buy the man a jacket and shirt to “make his day a little better”.

Shopping at the west Hollywood branch, the star claimed he tried to buy clothes and $40 gift card, but he says a cashier claimed the generous act was illegal and against store policy.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain yesterday, John said the discount chain should make amends by donating money to homeless charities within the area.

Speaking on the show to hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ranvir Singh, he said: “They didn’t want me buying anything for the homeless guy so I went off on them, went on social media. I shamed them.

“They did a response but it was a very corporate response and I think they should be doing something like donating to one of the major homeless charities in the area, or across the United States.”

The actor previously uploaded a furious video complaint to Twitter, where he has 500,000 followers, he said: “I was lectured by the Target staff that I was not allowed to do that. Target, that is a stupid rule.

“How dare you tell me as a customer who I am allowed to buy for … that was a homeless gentleman who needed some help and you need to change your policies.”

He captioned the upload: “I am disgusted by what I was told. Arrest me for trying to help someone. The stupidity behind that rule. I want an explanation. My fans and followers please message Target regarding this.”

The tweet quickly went viral, racking up more than 12,000 likes in just a few hours.

It also generated nearly 6000 retweets and hundreds of comments from supportive fans.

Target said: “We absolutely do not have a policy against this type of purchase, and are addressing it immediately with the team members involved.”
