SCOTS MEDALLIST CHARGED IN BOLT CLUB
Boxing champ faces assault rap after Gold Coast bust-up
A FORMER Scots Commonwealth Games medallist has been charged over an alleged glassing incident at a Gold Coast nightclub. Police quizzed Stephen Lavelle, 27, after a bust-up at Sin City – where eight-time Olympic gold winner Usain Bolt was performing a DJ set. Lavelle won a boxing bronze at the Glasgow Games in 2014. Originally from Glasgow’s Gorbals, he now lives in Melbourne. He was held by police but granted watch house bail hours later. Lavelle left the Southport watch house at about 8am, covering his face and wearing a black T-shirt and white, blood-splattered shorts.
Police allege the disturbance began at about 3am on the dancefloor at Sin City in Surfers Paradise – involving Lavelle and two 18-year-olds, a man and a woman.
An online news report included a police statement which read: “Police will allege the incident rapidly escalated into a physical confrontation during which time the woman was punched in the face and a glass thrown at the 18-year-old man, striking him in the face and causing a significant laceration.”
The alleged assault was stopped by bouncers, who escorted both men out of the venue and called police.
The 18-year-old man was yesterday at hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The woman was not injured.
Police have charged Lavelle with one count of assault including bodily harm and one count of common assault.
He is due to appear at Southport Magistrates’ Court on April 30.
