PER MERTESACKER has urged Arsenal’s players to ensure boss Arsene Wenger leaves on a high. Wenger delivered the bombshell yesterday that he is leaving at the end of the season. When Mertesacker heard the news he stood up and issued a rallying cry to the rest of the squad. And he wants the players to deliver Europa League success so Wenger’s 22-year reign can end in glory.

The German centre-back said: “It was emotional when Wenger made his speech. It’s a sad feeling right now.

“He is the major figure of the club for more than 20 years. The final games under him will be emotional.

“It’s an honour to be involved in his last games and we will fight to make this season a success story.

“We want to give Arsene Wenger a farewell story that no one will forget.”
