CHUBBY SHOW AXED OVER PUBLIC OUTCRY
Smutty comic told his gig could wreck council’s image
CONTROVERSIAL comedian Roy “Chubby” Brown has had the plug pulled on one of his Scottish shows after complaints from the public.
The 73-year-old stand-up – famous for his smutty jokes – has had his July 14 gig scrapped at the Town House venue in Hamilton.
Managers at the venue – owned by South Lanarkshire Council – told Brown his show could be “detrimental to the public image” of the organisation.
The venue is operated by the BY MICHAEL PRINGLE reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk council’s South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture arm.
They have been in touch with the comic’s promoters HRH Live, stating that the content of his material has been the subject of a number of complaints.
Yorkshireman Brown’s comedy routine is considered by many to be sexist. But Tony Jo, of HRH Live, said: “I received an email saying that regrettably they had to cancel the show, saying it could be ‘detrimental to their public image’ and that it doesn’t promote their corporate values.
“You could say that about almost any comedian — there are a lot of comedians whose content is a lot stronger than Roy’s.”
He added: “Roy’s shows sell out everywhere – surely the number of people who have bought tickets outnumber the two or three who have made complaints? The minority are ruling the majority.”
South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture said: “Following a review of the booking, it was decided the act was not suitable for a publiclyfunded venue.”
Town House management have emailed fans with tickets for the show to tell them it has been axed.
