from the bathroom. Georgia said: “Toyah hears screams and Eva says she has gone in to labour but unfortunately the door to the bathroom has fallen off, with Eva trapped inside.

“Toyah smashes the hell out of that door because she is going to make sure that Eva and her baby are OK.

“Toyah finds herself delivering the baby and what I love about this so much is it reminded me of my days on Casualty – because this is the kind of thing happens on those kind of shows all the time.”

Returning to Corrie and the surrogacy storyline has certainly maintained her high profile – but as she was reminded earlier this month, being famous comes with its downsides.

And while she usually has no issue being approached by fans, she was less than impressed at being stopped for a selfie while at the doctors. She wrote on Twitter: “Since when was it deemed acceptable to ask for selfies in the doctors’ reception? You have no idea what I’m here for and it’s completely inappropriate, but apparently I’m the ‘rude’ one for saying no.

“I was clearly uncomfortable but was called rude and she said something about ‘posting this on Facebook’. I never usually say no to anyone but I felt vulnerable.” Georgia quickly received supportive replies from Jane Danson, who plays sister Leanne in the soap, and Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle Connor.

Toyah’s wild plan gets even crazier as it emerges the surrogate is supposed to be in Dubai – and the desperate Rovers Return landlady has to come up with a yarn to tell Peter as the pair name their daughter Susie.

The storyline will eventually see Catherine leaving the Street and Georgia promises more shattering plot twists.

And, of course, with Corrie being a soap, Toyah won’t be able to bring up her new daughter without the truth coming out.

Georgia said: “What we are creating is a sense of foreboding so that the audience knows that things are going to go wrong before the characters do.

“We are telling a story that is almost unbelievable but does come out of the emotion that is someone being desperate for a baby.

“Toyah’s house of cards is going to collapse before she can see it and that’s part of the drama – waiting for that house of cards to collapse.”

The actress, who lives in Bristol with her longtime partner, Mark Letheren, who she met when they were on Casualty, is stocking up on hankies for the coming months as Toyah’s world crashes down around her. She said: “I think what’s actually really sad about it – and this will be dealt with later down the line – is that Toyah hasn’t properly grieved for the baby she’s lost.

“The surrogate miscarried Toyah and Peter’s biological child, and Toyah’s just thrown herself into this crazy plan with Eva.

“This plan is so crazy and doesn’t ever seem like it’s going to work but once they have started it there’s never really a good time to back out. They’ve gone too far and they get in too deep.

“If this did work, it would be perfect for everyone but of course, this is soap.”

This Friday, Toyah returns to the Rovers with her new daughter Susie and everyone is ecstatic.

Georgia said: “Toyah is completely overwhelmed with love and she is in a bubble. Everyone is so thrilled for them.

“Ken is delighted and is one of the first people over to congratulate them and see the baby.

“There is a really powerful moment when Peter picks up what he believes to be his child for the first time – she sees the love in his eyes and at that moment she absolutely believes that she has made the right decision for the right reasons.” ●Coronation Street is on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, STV.
