A FOOTBALL coach who was critically injured in a tourist bus smash in Malta is out of a coma and speaking to his family.

Simon Morrison, 42, suffered serious head injuries in the accident on April 8 which left two other passengers dead.

Relatives are delighted that he is conscious and able to communicate after being flown home to Aberdeen by air ambulance.

The youth coach at the city’s Middlefield Wasps had been in an induced coma.

Brother-in-law Michael Henderson said the family were “overjoyed” but were waiting to see how his recovery progresses. He added: “We are able to speak to him but he’s only giving one word answers.

“At least he’s still here with us and is able to speak.

“We are just taking each day as it comes.”

Simon, who suffered a stroke two years ago, was with his sister Suzanne Henderson, her husband Michael and their two children in Malta. They were on the top deck of an open-top bus which hit overhanging tree branches in the Zurrieq area.

A 37-year-old Spanish woman and a 62-year-old man from Belgium died.

Simon had emergency treatment in Malta before being transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary last Saturday.

Friends from Middlefield Wasps have rallied round to support him.

Spokesman Nick Runcie said: “I went to see him. He was sticking his tongue out at me and winking.

“He is a fighter and it’s still a long recovery period.

“Thank you for all the messages and to all who have donated to our Just Giving page for the family.”
