OFFICER IS ‘MAIN TARGET’ IN LAWSUIT
BY RECORD REPORTER reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk THE dad of a student killed in the Parkland school shooting is suing the armed officer who stood outside the building as people were massacred inside.
Meadow Pollack, 18, was among 17 killed on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.
Her father Andrew said sheriff ’s deputy Scot Peterson, 54, is his “main target” in the wrongful death lawsuit.
Andrew said: “He let my daughter get shot nine times at point-blank range.
“He had the opportunity to go in and instead let all those people get murdered.”
The lawsuit, filed on Monday, names others including 19-year-old shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz, the couple who took Cruz in after his mum died and mental health units.
Peterson was suspended, then quit and retired when footage showed he never entered the school when the gunfire began.
Andrew said: “Peterson could have stopped it, could have saved my kid. Nobody should be able to not do their job, receive a pension and ride off into the sunset.”
The lawsuit claims Peterson “cowered” between two walls as the gunman “rained bullets upon the teachers and students”.
Peterson, who had worked for 33 years in law enforcement, issued a statement through an attorney after the shooting saying that allegations he was a coward were “patently untrue”.
