Higgins isn’t Trumped yet as he stages a fightback
JOHN HIGGINS escaped the first session of his tasty quarter-final against Judd Trump only 5-3 behind at the World Championship.
At one stage it looked like it could be a rout when Trump stormed into a 4-1 lead in the repeat of the classic 2011 final.
However, Higgins characteristically battled back to reduce his arrears to 4-3 before Trump finished the session with a 77 break to extend his lead.
The pair resume for eight more frames this morning before playing to a finish in the evening.
Meanwhile, Mark Williams has called for potting plodders to be named and shamed.
World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn has introduced a new system to highlight players who have an average shot time of over 30 seconds for slow play.
And two-time world champ Williams believes fast play can only benefit the sport.
Snooker’s snail-paced potters will be published for all to see and could potentially be fined.
The Welshman’s pal Lee Walker is the slowest player on the tour, taking over 34 seconds per shot.
Williams, who continues his World Championship quarter-final against Ali Carter today tied at 4-4, said: “It can be really dull watching slow players.
“I saw some of the players at the qualifiers taking 40 seconds a shot, it is ridiculous.
“Twenty five or 30 seconds should be ample time to play any shot. If they do bring fines in I think it’s good.
“If you’re at 35 or 40 seconds and you get a £250 fine, trust me you’ll speed up.”
