FROM BACK PAGE an agreement between the Ibrox club and the Liverpool heroes was made in principle yesterday after a further round of talks took place in London.

And it’s anticipated the pair’s appointment could now be rubber-stamped and officially confirmed within the next 24 hours.

Gerrard flew to the English capital from Rome yesterday lunchtime to head straight into a final round of negotiations after working as a pundit at the Stadio Olimpico – where his old club booked a place in the Champions League Final on Wednesday night.

The talks followed on from initial discussions held recently with Gerrard, his representatives and the Ibrox hierarchy, including managing director Stewart Robertson and director of football Mark Allen.

Record Sport also understands Gerrard has already put together a list of signing targets with former Reds team-mate, veteran Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel, one of his priority targets.

And sources down south insisted last night he has been convinced that sufficient funds will be made available in order to give him and right-hand man McAllister a fighting chance in a head to head with former Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers.

Gerrard has been seeking assurances on the size and scale of his transfer budget and it’s believed his decision has been based upon the promise of fresh investment at Rangers.

Ibrox chairman Dave King has offered guarantees of the sums available to mount a credible challenge to old rivals Celtic.

The ex-England skipper is under no pressure to quit his position as academy coach at Liverpool before the end of the season but is excited at the prospect of taking his first steps in management at Rangers.

He could even travel to Ibrox with McAllister to take in tomorrow’s top-six clash with Kilmarnock.

Meanwhile, Rangers have handed young Swedish stopper Thomas Isherwood a trial.

The 20-year-old is with Bayern Munich’s B team but his contract with the German giants is due to expire in the summer.

The central defender is attracting interest from the Light Blues and has spent this week training at Murray Park.

In the absence of a permanent manager, director of football Allen has been scouting talent with Scott Arfield joining from Burnley and Allan McGregor considering an Ibrox return.

Rangers desperately need to strengthen in the central defensive area with Russell Martin’s loan deal from Norwich due to end and Bruno Alves likely to depart.

Isherwood is one for the future and reports recently linked him with Celtic but it’s Rangers who are running the rule over him.
