the full show. And on May 28, after series two has been repeated, a proper finale will be screened.

The nation will be holding its breath praying the pair finally get together.

Kay, 44, was stunned by the outcry over the series two finale. The Bolton funnyman said: “I’m sorry I upset people. I didn’t mean to upset anybody. I didn’t think there would be petitions.”

The unscripted episode will see the pair ad-libbing all the way through. Kay said: “It’s always good to try and do something original and I couldn’t think of any other narrative comedies that have ever made a fully improvised episode.

“As Sian and myself often ad lib when filming, we thought we’d give it a go for an entire episode.

“We just reacted to whatever came on the radio and just went with it, good or bad. We hope people like it.”

In the episode at the end of the month, viewers will find out what happened the day after Sian declared: “I love you, John, and it kills me you don’t feel the same.”

The comic and the Welsh actress have known each other since they met in 1995 at Salford University, where they were both studying performing arts. But while Kay’s career soared, Gibson was working in a call centre.

He was developing Car Share and asked her for advice until the characters became more like them. And their friendship shines through on screen.

Gibson, 41, said: “We were always laughing and nearly all of the laughter you see in Car Share is completely genuine. Peter knows how to make me laugh with just a look – so he constantly makes me giggle.”

The show’s return has been highly anticipated after Kay cancelled his live tour due to “unforeseen family circumstances” in December.

Last month, he surprised fans at a charity screening of the unscripted and final episode. He said: “It’s absolutely wonderful hearing an audience react to what you’ve been so hard working on for so long. It’s really rewarding.”

Peter Kay’s Car Share Unscripted is on Monday on BBC1 at 10pm. Series two will then be repeated with the finale going out on May 28.
