“It’s stuff that has been locked away for years, very painful stuff, and she finally feels able to talk about it.
“The storyline is very serious in nature so it is a wonderful challenge.
“The relationship between Charity and Vanessa is showing a different dimension to the usual gold-digging Charity. It’s a love story and is breathing new life into my character, especially seeing her face up to her secret past.”
Emmerdale have won a string of gongs at the Baftas, British Soap Awards and National Television Awards. They have been supported throughout the research and preparation of Charity’s storyline by staff at North Yorkshire’s Rape Unit.
Emmerdale series producer Iain MacLeod said: “We wanted to explore the devastating, formative experiences Charity went through as a vulnerable teenager.”
