“That’s why the big clubs give these guys the job – because there’s a trust there, an understand­ing of the club.

“That was the case for me as well. And there’s no doubt it was still a risk from my point of view and from Celtic’s point of view.

“But they had a lot of faith in me and in the end I was able to reward that faith with trophies and European progress.

“Steven is different. He’s coming from the outside. If he’s as good a manager as he was a player we’re all knackered. But it would take some doing to be as good as he was as a player.”

For now Lennon is absolutely focused on avenging the 4-1 reverse at Aberdeen in December he reckoned was their worst performanc­e of the season.

He added: “It’s important we don’t lose the game because we don’t want to give Aberdeen a six-point buffer going into the last two games. That would make it really difficult to finish second.

“Regardless of the game against Celtic this was always going to be a pivotal game in the five. Psychologi­cally Rangers have had a tough week but you can’t write them off in the race for second. I’m sure everyone will be looking for a reaction.

“We’re not ruling Rangers out of it just yet but we can only take care of our own side of things – and we’re going to Aberdeen to win the game.”
