Gary sinks MVG to set up potential 02 decider

-

GARY ANDERSON sank Michael van Gerwen with a magical masterclass to set the pair up for a potentially classic Unibet Premier League Final.

The Flying Scotsman sent the sell-out crowd in Aberdeen wild with a superb 7-5 win over the World No.1.

Anderson’s win at the BHGE Arena moved him third in the standings and ensured the big two won’t meet in next week’s last-four clashes at London’s O2.

Instead, the Musselburgh man will play his protege Michael Smith in the first semi-final, while the Dutch dynamo faces Rob Cross in the second.

Anderson said: “I reckon Aberdeen was louder than Rotterdam. This crowd and the Glasgow crowd are incredible for me.

“Playing in Scotland, you

“I was giving him chances and if they go in it’s a different story. I’d rather have played MVG in the semi-final but I feel as though it’s going to be a good week.

“There’s some difference in Michael (Smith) from two years ago, he has been absolutely brilliant.

“I told him after he beat me in our first game that I was going to get him in Rotterdam. Now I’m going to have to do it again.”

Snakebite said: “I was pleased I could do Gary a favour and I hope he can take his third Premier League title.”

Smith sealed second with a fighting 6-6 draw against Raymond van Barneveld.

Bully Boy has been struck down by a dose of pleurisy but still managed to dig out a point to end the campaign one spot behind van Gerwen having lost just five of his 16 qualification matches.

Smith said: “I’m okay. I was a bit tired up there but I have a job to do. I could lie down and roll over with pain but I wanted to play.”

Cross’ 6-6 stalemate with Simon Whitlock dropped him to fourth and into a clash with van Gerwen. But he said: “It doesn’t matter who you play. You need to beat the best to win so I’m looking forward to it.”
