“It shows that on a given day, with the right performanc­e and personnel, you can give Celtic a game.

“But right now Celtic have the upper hand with their personnel.

“The way Brendan has been talking, it looks as though Celtic are going to get stronger again so that puts added pressure on to teams who are trying to close the gap.”

McAllister said: “It’s a massive compliment to be the guy Steven asked to be his assistant so I’m honoured. “I wouldn’t have said it would be the Rangers job but I had a feeling in my blood we’d work together. “And it’s happened at a great club in Glasgow who have been through a tough few seasons but hopefully we can make a difference.”
