STREAMING GIANTS SIGN UP SCOTS COMIC

-

SCOTS comic Daniel Sloss is on the brink of international stardom after landing a deal to screen two stand-up shows on Netflix.

The streaming giants will show the 27-year-old’s hit shows Dark and the sequel Jigsaw.

It’s understood the specials will go out this year, although final dates have still to be announced.

Daniel, who was brought up in Fife but lives in Edinburgh, said: “For years, I’ve wanted to have my full-length shows out there and I think the best platform for comedy specials is Netflix.

“I have a worldwide deal for two shows so anyone in the world can watch them back-to-back and then come to see a whole new different show when I’m next in their neck of the woods.

“We’ve been working on this for a long time.

“The last stand-up that was filmed was for a DVD when I was 21. “It was full of the jokes I was making as a teenager that my manager made me burn for the show as an archive.

“I hate that young version of me.

“I still think there are people out there who think of me as a floppy haired, precocious teenager.

“I’m just not that person any more. Since then, I’ve started finding my genuine own comedy voice but there is no record of the shows I’ve done.”

Netflix has become BY RICK FULTON a leading platform for discovering new stand-up talent, as well as a place for old favourites including Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld and Dave Chappelle.

To seal the deal with Netflix, Daniel filmed his 2016 stand-up show So? – now rebranded as Jigsaw – in Australia last year and showed it to them.

Daniel subsequently filmed his 2015 show Dark in Los Angeles and a number of Netflix executives went along.

He said he cried like a baby when his manager told him the streaming firm were on board.

Daniel added: “I couldn’t tell anyone, so I spent the night getting drunk and having to pretend to go out for a cigarette so I could break down again.”

He said of the Netflix deal: “I don’t know if it will be a game-changer. I’m just hoping it allows a wider audience to see me and maybe I’ll play to bigger places in America and more places in Europe.”

Daniel was 14 when his mum met comedian Frankie Boyle, who gave him his first writing break and some good advice.

He performed his frist solo stand-up show in 2007 and made his debut at the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time in 2008.

Daniel has sold out Fringe runs every year and is one of the event’s biggest comedy draws.

He will perform the world premiere of his latest live show Daniel Sloss: X at the Fringe from August 2-16. Tickets for the gigs at the Pleasance at EICC are available from from edfringe.com or pleasance.co.uk.
