Sturgeon attends service

-

THE Scottish victim of the bombing was in the thoughts of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon as she attended yesterday’s service in Manchester.

Eilidh Macleod, 14, from Barra in the Outer Hebrides, had travelled from the island with her friend Laura McIntyre.

Laura survived but was seriously injured and spent months in hospital recovering.

Sturgeon said: “I hope today’s memorial service brings some comfort to the bereaved and to those who are still living with their injuries.”

Glasgow Cathedral also screened the service live.

In Barra, a mass was conducted in the local church. The service in Manchester was also beamed to Castlebay School, where Eilidh was a pupil. Throughout the city yesterday, thousands observed a minute’s silence in a mood of reflection and remembrance.

But last night the mood changed to one of celebration as more than 3000 singers took to the stage to belt out their defiance and prove that love, hope and music can beat fear and hatred.

It was a fitting tribute to the music fans killed at the end of Ariana Grande’s concert at the Manchester Arena, and to a city that refused to be bowed by terror.

One of the choirs that took part in the Manchester Together concert was made up purely of children and their parents who survived the bomb.

Some broke down in tears as they sang Rise Up – but with their friends’ arms around them, and the support of the thousands packed into the city’s Albert Square, they were able to stay strong.

The last half hour was dedicated to the people of Manchester, those who pulled
