I can see you through the scope of my rifle

Gun fanatic sent woman messages saying he would turn up at school

A GUN enthusiast sent a terrifying message to a woman saying he could see her through a scope of his rifle from miles away, a court heard yesterday.

Kevin McLean also told Karen Traill he had 10 guns and two bulletproof vests. He said he “loved shooting targets” and threatened to turn up at a school where she used to work.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard McLean met Karen through Match.com.

They began chatting on the dating website and later on WhatsApp.

But Karen went to police after receiving sinister messages from McLean.

He threatened to turn up at Bell Baxter High School in Cupar, Fife, leaving her “scared” for the safety of pupils.

After he was arrested, McLean, 37, confirmed he had sent the messages.

Fiscal depute Laura Bruce said: “He said he ‘didn’t mean any harm’ but agreed the tone of the messages would suggest a threat. But he said he would never dream of doing anything such as shooting people.”

McLean, 37, of Lochgelly, Fife, admitted a charge under the Communications Act in February.

His lawyer Paul Parker Smith said: “He’s from a farming background where the use of guns is fairly commonplace.

“He did have a number of air rifles but following this, they were seized by police and crushed and his air weapon licence has been revoked.

“He understands he was completely wrong to send messages about threatening to shoot people and it was never his intention to scare her.”

McLean will be sentenced next month.
