Lethal Lizzie earns Scotland call after cup heroics

-

HIBS forward Lizzie Arnot has been rewarded for demolishing Celtic on Sunday with a recall to the Scotland squad.

The winger scored five goals and provided two assists in Hibs’ 9-0 win which clinched a third successive SWPL Cup win.

Arnot only returned to the side last month after a year out with an ACL injury – so this is the first opportunity Scotland head coach Shelley Kerr has had to pick her.

The 22-year-old is one of 23 players named for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Poland.

Kerr said: “Five goals, two assists and still got more to give – that’s exciting.

“Lizzie has been out for a long time now and she was always one of the players we identified as being a talent. She was unlucky to get her injury, but she has been so focused, so resilient, and she has been so regimented in getting herself fit.

“It has been pleasing to see, and particularly in the last two games. I also watched her against Glasgow City and she did very well.”

Lana Clelland, who plays for Italian club UPC Tavagnacco, is another who returns after missing the last two World Cup qualifiers through injury.

Scotland, who are second in Group 2 with nine points from four games, play Belarus at Falkirk Stadium on June 7.

That is followed five days later with the return against Poland in Kielce.
