Nelms has a 2020 vision of Dundee’s new ground

- BY ALAN MARSHALL

DUNDEE managing director John Nelms hopes the club’s proposed new 15,000-capacity stadium will be completed by 2020.

The Dark Blues submitted planning documents for the new facility at Camperdown Park last year and Nelms is hoping the club will soon be given the green light from Dundee City Council to begin construction.

The project also includes a new 100-bedroom budget hotel, a crematorium and space designated for up to 70 flats and 140 houses.

Commercial units and community facilities such as restaurants, a gym and creche are also part of the proposals.

Nelms said: “Once we get past two or three milestones we will be off and running. We’re close to pushing some buttons.

“Ideally we’d like to be in the stadium by the 2020 season. Just to keep Dens standing is very expensive – £300,000 plus per year.

“That’s not enhancing it in any way for fans coming through – that’s just to keep it standing.”

Nelms insists the club are open-minded about stadium naming rights.

He said: “The fans might have a name for it already but when we get closer we will put it out there and start to talk about what the name can be and what’s important in the name.

“If someone wants to put their name on it then we’re doing something right.”
