Rovers Return could become a cocktail bar
Soap’s ‘fun’ storyline may be hard to swallow
CORONATION Street regulars will be choking on their bitter this summer – when a businessman unveils plans to turn the Rovers Return into a trendy cocktail bar.
In scenes filmed this week, brewery heir Henry Newton tells Gemma Winter he will buy the pub and make her landlady.
A source said: “Henry decides he really likes Gemma and they get together this summer.
“As part of the relationship, he tries to woo her by saying he will buy the pub and she can go from working in the kebab shop to landlady of the Rovers.
“Gemma is very excited and when Henry says he wants the pub to be more sophisticated, she starts planning a cocktail menu.
“But the plans won’t go down well with regulars – and if it goes ahead, there would be an outcry on the Street as most people go in there for a quiet pint and not a pina colada.”
It is understood the plans are yet to take shape and the sale has not gone through, meaning a possible U-turn or that Henry’s bid to buy the pub may not work out.
Posh Henry, played by George Banks, has previously had a fling with Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell), which started out as a bet with a friend.
But in the coming months, he will develop feelings for her.
The light-hearted storyline, one of the last before Kate Oates leaves as executive producer, departs from recent hard-hitting plots.
The show source added: “Corrie is all about getting the balance right and this will be one of the fun stories coming up for the soap.”
