Something happens .. after 16-year wait

Comeback song about death of Diana

-

DEL Amitri are set to make a comeback – with a song about Princess Diana’s death.

The Scots rockers, who shot to fame with the single Nothing Ever Happens in 1989, are writing tracks for their first album in 16 years.

It comes as the band, who enjoyed five Top 10 albums before they split up in 2002, start rehearsals for a summer UK tour.

Singer Justin Currie, 53, revealed one of their new songs focuses on Diana’s death.

He said: “There is a song about that rich woman dying in 1997. I can’t even bring myself to say her name.

“The song is about the woman dying in a tunnel in France. It’s called BY JOHN DINGWALL reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk Whatever Died In Denver, because we were in Denver when she was killed.

“I have very strong memories of that night. It was quite an odd experience because we were on a tour bus and the bus was divided between people who couldn’t care less, like me and (guitarist) Iain (Harvie), and people who were very upset.”

Currie also wrote a song about Diana in 1998 – but scrapped plans to make it the B-side to the band’s official Scotland World Cup anthem, Don’t Come Home Too Soon.

He said: “I had another song about her called One More Rich Girl Dead that I tried to put on the B-side to the football song. “Iain said it was probably a bad idea. I was like, ‘Oh, go on let me.’” Currie believes the band’s debut hit is as relevant today as ever. He said: “Nothing Ever Happens works any time there is a Tory government in power that nobody has the gumption to get rid of.” Del Amitri, who reformed briefly in 2013, will play Edinburgh Castle on July 21 and Glasgow’s Barrowland on July 28 and 29.
