meant to the club. Shankly had been trying for so long to win in Europe. Liverpool had lost the Cup Winners’ Cup Final in 1966 to Dortmund at Hampden.

“We knew Borussia Monchengladbach would be tough because they’d beaten Bayern Munich to the German title a couple of years earlier.

“European games at Anfield were amazing. The place was always packed and the Liverpool fans inspired us.

“Kevin Keegan got two in the first half and Larry Lloyd got another in the second.

“Gladbach could have got one back but Ray Clemence made a great save from a penalty by Jupp Heynckes.”

The recently departed Bayern Munich boss was one of Germany’s top strikers and he hit a first-half double in the return leg in Monchengladbach.

That left the Reds with a nervous 45 minutes defending to win 3-2 on aggregate before getting their hands on that elusive piece of silverware.

It fulfilled Shankly’s promise when he paid a joint-record £110,000 for Cormack, equalling the fee for Welsh striker John Toshack.

He said: “Shanks greeted me like a long-lost son. He said, ‘You’re going to win lots of medals here at Liverpool.’ I loved playing under him.”

Another Scot had a cameo role in Liverpool’s first triumph in 1973. Glaswegian Brian Hall, who died in 2015, made a brief late subs appearance at Anfield.

That paved the way for Scots like Kenny Dalglish to achieve glory at Liverpool and Cormack hopes Andy Robertson is next.

He said: “It would be great if Andy won in Kiev. He seems to play without any inhibitions. That’s what I did. Some people froze in big games, I loved them.”
