RANGERS must stump up £3million to land Brighton defender Connor Goldson.

Record Sport can reveal the Premier League club want a substantial sum for a player targeted by Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard.

Rangers chiefs are set to return to Brighton today to make an improved third offer for the centre-back.

Goldson will be allowed to leave if the price is right. But Rangers need to step up on their opening two bids which included add-ons and have both been rejected. The 25-year-old wants

regular top-team action and is seriously interested in making the switch to Glasgow.

Goldson is behind Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy in the central defensive pecking order at the Amex Stadium and manager Chris Hughton has signed Mainz stopper Leon Balogun to further open the door to a switch.

Brighton will not stand in the player’s way if a deal is agreed but want the right price for their man and it is believed a starting figure of £3m will be needed to get negotiations properly under way.

Goldson has been attracted hugely by the opportunity to work with Gerrard in Scotland’s top flight.

And now it is down to Rangers to meet the Brighton demands to get a deal done and make Goldson the fourth signing of the new manager’s revolution.

Already this summer Gerrard has snapped up Scott Arfield from Burnley, former Hull keeper Allan McGregor and Jamie Murphy, who also arrived from Brighton on a permanent deal.
