Brave wee Ruby has ice day out

-

BRAVE Ruby Hamilton enjoys an ice cream with a new pal as she comes a step closer to getting a prosthetic leg so she can run around like her brothers and sisters.

The nine-year-old met youngster Keeley Cerretti, 10, at the weekend to get the low-down on prosthetic legs and to discover how she is able to take part in sports.

We told recently how Ruby suffers from crippling condition proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), which affects one in 40,000 children. It results in a deformity of the hip and the leg being shortened. Ruby’s right leg is 4.5cm shorter than her left.

But before an operation to have her shortened limb amputated so Ruby can get a prosthetic leg, she will have to see a psychologist to determine if she is happy with her decision to get the amputation.

Her mum Maddy, 36, said: “With the amputation she can have a normal life.”

Meanwhile, Ruby was getting to know Keeley from Larkhall, Lanarkshire, who had to have part of her foot amputated when it turned black and her leg virtually stopped growing.

It is now half the length of the other one and she wears a prosthetic so she can walk normally.

Maddy said: “To meet someone face to face was very helpful for us.” The meeting was organised by charity Finding Your Feet, who were created by quadruple amputee Corinne Hutton.
