Heartbroken mum’s touching tribute to her boy
THE devastated mum of a young man killed in a fireball crash has shared pictures of her son’s life in a poignant tribute.
Ellen McDaid said she needed the world to know about her son and the anguish his untimely death has caused.
Jonathan Smith was in his car in Edinburgh’s Maybury Road when he was involved in the smash almost two weeks ago.
Police believe the accident, which also left three other people needing hospital treatment, was caused by a driver in a stolen vehicle.
Ellen has posted an appeal on social media for information to help catch the driver.
His family and friends are sharing the #justiceforjonny hashtag in the hope someone with information will come forward.
Sharing pictures of Jonathan, BY JANE HAMILTON j.hamilton@dailyrecord.co.uk who was known as Jonny, from a baby to teenager she wrote: “This is some of Jonny’s first journey throughout his life.
“We as a family have only got a few things left that we can do for our son/brother and they will be the last things – his coffin, his last resting place, his head stone, the tears and for the rest of my life as a mother, daily visits to his grave.
“As hard as this is to write for me, I need the world to know so please share this heartbroken mother’s post #JusticeforJonny.”
Detectives are hunting for the driver of the grey Audi A3 – registration number SM17 EAK – which sped from the scene.
It was being driven recklessly along the chevrons of the carriageway leading to the Maybury roundabout, causing a BMW X5 to swerve into Jonny’s Peugeot 206. The Peugeot burst into flames and forensic tests are formally identifying him.
The Audi was later found dumped in Fife.
Jonny’s uncle, Robert McCallum, wrote on Facebook: “Our families appeal to anyone who may have information to please come forward and show compassion. Ask yourself what you would do if you were in the same position.
“Most will read this and think, ‘Never going to happen to us’ or ‘how unfortunate that family have been’.
“That’s exactly what we would have thought right up to the accident on Friday, May 25.”
