Aberdeen for Norwich. He said: “Dons fans needn’t mourn his loss for long. On the weekend’s form, the guy will be back on loan from Norwich by December.”

James Robertson, Dennistoun, had a more-amusing outlook on the trip. He said: “Scotland missed a trick in Mexico.

“With the high altitude and thin air, the players should have been wearing those Serena Williams catsuits. They’d have been flying around. McLeish could even have worn one on the touchline.”

Back on the club scene, there was no shortage of callers offering pointers to Steven Gerrard as he settles into his new role at Ibrox.

John Park, Glasgow, said: “His biggest problem is centre backs. That has been the issue for years.”

Gerrard is also getting plenty of advice from ex-players and management at Ibrox but that brought its own mirth. John Breen, Gorbals, said: “The only man who could be helping him is Brendan Rodgers. I’m having my first bet on next season and it’s on the treble Treble.” Brian Madden, Belfast, echoed John’s comments. He said: “If Rangers are ever to beat Celtic, never mind win the league, it’s not Steven Gerrard they need, it’s St Gerard.”

Paul Spriggs, Maybole, said: “People slag Celtic off and say they only win because they have all the money but they have earned that money.”

Finally, Dunky Robertson, London, understands why Ally McCoist wants the St Mirren job. He said: “If that happens, the Saints fans can look forward to their club being used as a feeder for Rangers and all of their best players being sold on the cheap to Ibrox.”
