LOOKING AFTER NO.1

Goram: McGregor will be Gerrard’s key signing but keeper needs protection

ANDY GORAM is adamant Allan McGregor will prove the key signing of the Steven Gerrard revolution.

But the Rangers legend has warned the new Ibrox manager he’ll need to form a proper barrier in front of his new No.1 to avoid opening the returning hero up to the same anguish suffered by Wes Foderingham.

Goram is delighted McGregor is back in the fold.

The Nine-in-a-Row hero was felt to be worth over 10 points a season during his halcyon days and the summer signing was of equal value during his first spell at Ibrox before he left in the wake of administration six years ago.

McGregor can’t wait to get started again under Gerrard and Goram is convinced his signing is a magnificent capture, despite his advanced age of 36.

However, the caveat for the former keeper is that the new boss will have to find a backline stronger than predecessors Pedro Caixinha and Graeme Murty as McGregor can’t solve the defensive issues on his own.

Goram said: “There have been noises that Wes is going away anyway and no matter what you do as a manager, you’ve got to bring players in who are better than what you’ve got.

“And in my opinion, Allan is better than what they’ve got. People go on about age.

“I played until a good age but age doesn’t matter.

“It’s down to the quality he has and the level he has been playing at.

“Allan will turn out to be one of the best signings because he has the experience.

“And the important thing is he knows the club.

“He knows the history and he knows the demands of Ibrox because it’s not easy to play for Rangers. He at least knows what it’s all about.

“But my dad always used to say you’re only as good as what’s in front of you and that’s right.

“If Allan had played in the Rangers team last season he’d have lost goals because they couldn’t defend.

“Every game they needed to score two goals to be involved.

“He’d have been exposed last season so it’s about getting the right people around him.

“If a dominant centre-half came in and a good, hardtackling midfielder, someone like Gerrard himself, they’ll be all right but it’s great to see McGregor back.”

Goram has been happy enough with the recruitment so far.

As well as McGregor, Gerrard has added Burnley’s Scott Arfield and also turned a loan deal for
