African coast’s top rev-utation
THE Garden Route along the South African coast is one of those big bucket-list destinations.
Most people would take the car – or book themselves on to an escorted tour – but what if we told you you could drive along it on a Harley Davidson?
Starting at £2497pp, you can treat yourself to a pre-booked journey that includes flights, hotels and a rented Harley.
After arriving in Cape Town (and enjoying two days to yourself), you’ll collect your hog and start your way towards the Cape Winelands. Here you’ll find rolling hills, Cape-Dutch homesteads, sumptuous restaurants, breath-taking scenery and award-winning wineries.
Then kick things off on the scenic Mountain Route (also known as Route62) – a passage bordered by imposing mountains, cliffs, crystalclear streams and indigenous flora. You’ll even pass the longest wine route in the Western Cape.
Eventually, you’ll reach the Eastern Cape, where some of the country’s most powerful political figures – like Steve Biko and Nelson Mandela – were born. You’ll enjoy an overnight stay in the nearby Willowmore. Then you’ll move on to Addo Elephant National Park, where you’ll enjoy an early morning game drive before starting your journey along the Garden Route. You’ll reach Tsitsikamma, bordered to the north by the majestic Tsitsikamma Mountains and to the south by the Indian Ocean.
The next day, you’ll rev your engine onwards to Knysna, one of the Garden Route’s most popular towns. It’s famous for its oyster festival, warm people and beautiful landscapes. You’ll then continue on to the town of Swellendam.
The last destination is Hermanus, a popular seaside destination offering white sandy beaches, spectacular views, world-class wine estates and whale-watching opportunities.
After spending the night, you’ll travel back to Cape Town where you’ll drop off your Harley and have another chance to explore this famous city. To book, call Barrhead Travel’s worldwide team on 0800 484 0128.
