Big screen debut is in the Can now

-

ADAM HASTINGS reckons his Scotland debut will give his family more TV viewing options at Christmas.

The young playmaker revealed every festive season he can remember hero dad Gavin proudly showing videos of his amazing exploits.

Now he’s hoping there will also be footage of his own big-stage exploits to watch.

Hastings said: “Dad sticks on the videos every Christmas. They are rubbish – he just kicks it!

“Seriously, I have seen all the big ones such as the matches in the Grand Slam of 1990. He was pretty handy wasn’t he?

“He was back home watching the match on the telly but is coming out to Houston for our game against the USA and it will be nice to have him around. I hope I will be involved.

“Dad told me just to enjoy the experience of my first cap and to BY DAVID KELSO savour the moment because it only happens once. That was the only advice he gave me – and I certainly did that.

“When we walked out of the changing room I felt a bit emotional but I managed to hold back the tears during the anthems. It was all good.”

It also turned out to be a magical occasion for his bench mate and Glasgow colleague George Turner.

The hooker notched a hat-trick of touchdowns yesterday as Scotland crushed the Canadians.

Turner said: “I’m not meant to be someone who scores tries! I came on to make a physical impact and do a job at set-piece.

“I just happened to be in the right place three times – at the back of mauls which reached the line.

“There was a lot of banter afterwards with the guys accusing me of being a greedy so-and-so for not sharing them around.

“Coach Gregor Townsend had told me it was a chance to play myself into the starting team.

“It felt good because last year I went on the Scotland tour and didn’t get on.”

Townsend has labelled Turner the best tackler in his squad.

And the Warriors star added: “I play rugby for the physical side of it. I like tackling – I suppose I am a bit of a nutter really.”

The other Scots scores were snapped up by Byron McGuigan, Ruaridh Jackson, Magnus Bradbury and debut boy Lewis Carmichael.

Sam Hidalgo-Clyne and Blair Kinghorn shared the rest of the points with the boot.

And Townsend said: “Adam did really well. He was a big part of us getting impetus when Canada were down to 14 men.

“He also made the right decisions in the opposition 22 zone and might start in Houston.

“George’s tries were excellent – and testimony to the work forwards coach Dan McFarland has been doing.

“He has been getting more and more accurate around the setpiece and the scrum went well.

“George will put pressure on the other hookers and if he grabs his opportunities he will get more chances.”
