Outrageous Vivienne Westwood creations go under hammer for charity

BY ANNA BURNSIDE issue of fit. Sam said: “I can get into some of them, just. I can squeeze them on but I’m not saying how that would look.

“Don’t think I haven’t tried. But whether I would wear them out in public is a different thing.

“I’ve got much bigger, I’ve changed shape. And I’ve got a lot more practical, although I still like a bit of a twist to it.”

Sam’s 90s wardrobe will be auctioned off in two batches – one on Monday and one in September.

The first ones under the hammer were all made for him by his friend Vivienne Westwood and are full of the bonkers designer’s humour and quirks.

One of the standout pieces is a four-piece tartan suit consisting of a kilt, trousers, jacket and waistcoat.

It had to go when a friend told him: “You can’t wear that, you look like Mrs Doubtfire.”

Sam, who grew up in New Cumnock, Ayrshire, was photographed with Kate Moss at a party in Claridges wearing a college striped suit with bondage trousers.

Sam said: “It’s Vivienne’s classic bondage trousers, with a really low waist and strap across the front. She made it for me in classic English Oxford print, with a classic shape of the waistcoat and a double-breasted jacket.” he oversized leopard-spot jacket is another of her unmistakable prints. He said: “They’ve all got that slight bit of Westwood subversion going on.”

Sam was so busy primping models for catwalks and magazine shoots that he didn’t even get round to wearing all his bespoke finery.

He admitted: “The red stripy one has never been worn at all. I might have tried it on at home.”

But he did get a lot of use from a floral jacket. He said: “It’s my favourite – an amazing, tweedy kind of thing. Vivienne loves all that dandyesque kind of stuff. I did wear that a lot.”

Amazingly, no one pointed or stared when he wore these creations.

Sam said: “By that point, I was not in Ayrshire, I was in London and New York, so I was OK on that one.”

He added: “I have no idea who will buy them. I’m just putting them out there for people to enjoy them. They don’t deserve to be hidden away.”
