We can be heroes

WE have, after years of debate, got the chance to ensure those in need of an organ transplant will have them more readily available when the new “optout” system comes into being.

Many of us have never bothered to register to donate our organs after our death and that meant patients died or went on living in pain because our permission was not given to remove our organs.

Now it will be an automatic removal unless we sign that we do not agree and carry a card to say so.

This is a huge step forward and without a doubt the right

Cull of the wild

RE: Gina Allison’s letter Save Song Birds (Record Readers, June 6), I am in my 87th year and can well remember before modern-day farming.

Farmers then would walk their farms carrying a rifle and would shoot any predatory birds, crows and magpies, as they would peck out the eyes of newborn lambs.

It was unusual to see a magpie. Now there are hundreds of them and they maraud through the bushes robbing nests of eggs and chicks. They also kill smaller adult birds.

Something really needs to be done or else the only birds left will be large ones. Anne Jones, Livingston
