WOMEN ARE WORKING ON
A RECORD number of women aged 65 and over are working.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics show 484,000 women of that age were employed in the three months to April, up 6.4 per cent on the previous quarter and the biggest increase for any group.
It came as the overall number of women in work reached an all-time high of just under 15.3million.
The increase has been partly due to ongoing changes to the state pension age for women, which is currently rising to 65.
The number of people in work jumped by 146,000 to 32.4million in the three months to April, the highest figure since records began in 1971.
The ONS data also revealed average wage growth slowed to 2.8 per cent in the three months to April, despite the unemployment rate falling to a 43-year low of 4.2 per cent.
TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: “At this rate pay packets won’t recover to their pre-recession levels for years.”
