Grandpa inspires topdives
ALAN ROBERTSON JAMES HEATLY will be emboldened by the memory of his late grandfather when the Euro Championships rock up in Edinburgh.
The 21-year-old was a history maker in Australia earlier this year when he became Scotland’s first Commonwealth Games diving medallist since Sir Peter Heatly’s gold in 1958.
The saltire his grandpa carried as flagbearer 60 years ago was on display again Down Under.
And the chance to follow up his Gold Coast bronze now beckons in August at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.
He said: “My grandpa was one of the founders of this club and said I should give it a go – I did and I’ve loved it ever since.
“My mum likes to bring it everywhere I compete because it’s like having a bit of grandpa with us still.
