CHUCKY made Child’s Play of dispatchin­g Germany – as the World Cup holders were left stunned by Mexico.

Match-winner Hirving Lozano is nicknamed “Chucky” after his resemblanc­e to the scary-looking doll in the horror movie.

But the PSV Eindhoven striker clearly hadn’t read the script and was right on cue with the goal that subjected the holders to a shock defeat, one that ended a run of seven straight wins for Germany in World Cup openers.

As World Cup shocks against the holders go this can be added to the list that includes Cameroon’s win over Argentina in 1990 and France’s shock defeat to Senegal in 2002.

Germany, No.1 in the rankings, had no answer to Mexico’s energy in the first half and resilience after the break, when they were forced to defend their slender lead until the final whistle.

West Ham ace Javier Hernandez, who played a key role in the winning goal, was in tears at the end as Mexico celebrated an historic win that has thrown Group F wide open.

Mexico boss Juan Carlos Osorio said: “In the first half we were the better team. In the second half they tried to attack more.

“We showed we have a bright future and I’m satisfied with what we did. We played with bravery when it was needed and also defended with all of our hearts.”

Germany’s famed defensive efficiency deserted them in a thrilling contest, while going forward they lacked the cutting edge required to break Mexico’s stubborn resistance.
