“But from the first time I saw the surgeon he told me as soon as my chest healed I’d be back playing in six to eight weeks.

“Many footballer­s will be playing with the same thing I had but I saw the specialist and he couldn’t let me go and play because it would have been on his head if anything happened.

“It was just basically a broken chest bone and it healed in six weeks. I was back running on holiday within four weeks.

“It was just one of those things. I was straight back in pre-season. After the operation I got tattoos saying, ‘keep faith’ on my legs.

“And I have another, ‘Dream as you’ll live forever. Live as you’ll die today.’

“There are a few little messages to myself from different times.”

Goldson admitted news of interest from Rangers came completely out of the blue but he is desperate to make the most of his fresh start after leaving England’s south coast.

He said: “It has been amazing. It is the summer I wanted. We had a healthy baby, our first child, and then I got the move I wanted.

“I haven’t played much football in the past two seasons so I just want to get started. I feel it’s the right stage of my career as I’m in a place where I kind of have to get my career on track.

“I wasn’t in a bad place but I was third choice at Brighton and I’m someone who always wants to play every week.

“I’ve always played every week apart from the last two years so it got to the stage where I knew I had to play week in, week out. I
