Beaten Jamie says he’s ready for Wimbledon

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

JAMIE MURRAY insisted he is ready for Wimbledon despite failing to defend his doubles title at the Fever-Tree Championships last night.

The Scot and Bruno Soares went down 6-4 6-3 to No.2 seeds John Peers and Henri Kontinen at Queen’s Club. The pair had won on the champions tiebreak in each of their previous three rounds.

But Murray said: “We got four great matches in, three of them on the Centre Court. We’re really happy with how the week has gone and looking forward to Wimbledon next week.

“We came through some really close matches this week so that will obviously stand us in good stead for that. My knee’s been holding up well since we got to grass and I hope it keeps up.”

Younger sibling Andy will continue this preparations for the grass-court Grand Slam by playing Stan Wawrinka in the first round of the Nature Valley International at Eastbourne today.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic admitted he choked in the Final of the singles at Queen’s – and then ruled himself out as a contender for Wimbledon.

The former world No 1. blew a match point against Marin Cilic in the second set and the Serb then lost six consecutive points when the heat was on in the tiebreak – including a double fault – before losing 5-7 7-6(4) 6-3.

Djokovic, who is returning from an elbow injury, last won a title 12 months ago. And he admitted he still lacks his old killer touch with the grass-court Grand Slam now just a week away.

“I played great – it wasn’t to be,” he said. “I was 4-1 up in the tiebreak.

I got a little bit tight there. I wouldn’t say I’m a contender at Wimbledon or anything like that. I have to keep my expectations very low considering my results in the last 12 months.”
