There are two world titles available there so we won’t cut off our nose to spite our face.

“We’re keeping all our options open, which is the sensible thing to do.”

Taylor’s unanimous points win over Postol has installed him as the mandatory challenger to Ramirez’s WBC crown and the fight could be held as early as the end of August.

McGuigan is convinced his charge is ready after coming through his toughest test, producing a barnstorming final four rounds to knock the Ukrainian down and win over the judges. He said: “Josh had to learn in the fight. I had to say to him, ‘Josh, you’re losing this’.

“It was a championship performance against a guy who would beat all of the other light welterweights in the world. He produced the goods down the stretch.

“This was a test against Postol and he stood up to it. He proved he is the quality kid I always believed he is and we’re now ready to go on and fight for the world title.” Has the World Cup had you on the edge of your seat? It has been a reasonably enjoyable week or so but the fireworks are still to come. A slow burner this one. He’s been quietly impressive so far. A sit-down with Walter Smith would probably be his smartest move yet. The end to the Germany game certainly did and Belgium’s clash with Tunisia was entertaining but there haven’t been enough games like that. But it’s relatively early days for the tournament to burst into life. Why wouldn’t you? You don’t have to get him in on an official capacity but he’s seen and done it all in his managerial career and for someone like Gerrard in his first job in senior management he will need all the advice he can get. It’s been a slow burner but it’s starting to warm up and Germany’s late winner against Sweden was as dramatic as you get. Once the makeweights get knocked out it should start to come to life. It’s now a well-worn cliche for new Rangers managers to trot out the Walter line and in many ways it’s a mark of respect. Gerrard should just follow his own instincts and allow the former Gers boss to enjoy his retirement in peace. I’ve loved it. Every game may not have been a classic but they’ve all been intriguing. Belgium, Croatia, Spain, Portugal and Russia have all impressed. The competition is beginning to hot up and it will take even greater shape when we reach the knockout phase. Should Steven Gerrard be picking the brains of Walter Smith? If a hotline to Walter is on tap it would make complete sense to utilise it. But Gerrard strikes me as someone who wants to be his own man and will do it his way, including making mistakes along the way in order to learn from them.
