WE’RE UP IN ARMS
PROTESTERS BESIEGE WEAPONS FAYRE
BY LAURA PATERSON reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk DELEGATES attending an international arms conference were branded “murderers” by peace campaigners.
Protesters from the Sink the Arms Fair Coalition were joined by other groups outside the Undersea Defence Technology conference at the Scottish Event Campus in Glasgow.
The three-day event involves presentations on new subsea weaponry and technology with about 1100 people from 40 countries expected to attend.
Some protesters were dressed the as grim reaper while others wore forensic-style white suits stained with fake blood. Some staged a sit-down protest and one man was reportedly arrested.
Groups in the coalition include the Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Campaign Against Arms Trade and the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
They criticised Glasgow City Council, who have 90 per cent ownership of the company who own the SEC. Scottish CND chairman Arthur West said: “All the groups in the coalition long for the day when the skills and expertise of the undoubtedly very clever people here are used for the good of humanity rather than to create more destruction in our world.”
On Monday, Council leader Susan Aitken said in a statement they are not responsible for the conference or contracts between the organisers and the venue.
