BEE GEE PAYS TRIBUTE TO BROTHERS

- BY HELEN WILLIAM reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk

BEE GEES legend Sir Barry Gibb received a knighthood yesterday – and said he hoped his late brothers would be proud. The 71-year-old’s moving tribute to Maurice and Robin came as Gibb collected his award from the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace. He said: “If it was not for my brothers, I would not be here. “If I had spent my whole life writing songs on my own, it would have meant something else altogether. “I hope and pray that they are aware of what has happened and that they are proud. I believe in that.” Gibb – the only remaining member of the chart-topping band – was honoured for his services to music and charity. Maurice Gibb died from complications following an operation to correct an intestinal blockage in 2003.

His twin Robin, who had cancer, died in 2012.

The Bee Gees were one of the most successful bands of all time, with classics including Night Fever, Stayin Alive, Jive Talkin, How Deep is Your Love, Words, Tragedy and You Win Again.

They also wrote hits for other stars, including Barbra Streisand, Dianna Ross and Dionne Warwick.

Gibb added: “Working with different artists has always been special for me. When someone you admire asks you to write a song, that is special motivation.”

Chef, restaurateur and TV presenter Rick Stein was also at the palace yesterday to collect a CBE.

The 71-year-old was honoured for his services to the economy.

He said: “To be able to travel the world as a British man, fascinated by the food and culture wherever I go and bringing it back home, is a dream job. It also reinforces the importance of everyone sitting down and enjoying good food together.”

Stein said he would be enjoying a celebratory lunch “that someone else has prepared” of turbot and burgundy, with 25 family and close friends.
