GETTING INTO SPIRIT

- BY GARRY OWEN

CALVADOS SPIRIT (3.30) can pay for a few rounds when he lands the valuable AGMA Carlisle Bell.

Useful for William Muir, the gelding showed the benefits of wind surgery when chasing the revitalized Escobar on his first start for Richard Fahey.

That race has worked out pretty well and the five-year-old can go one better today with any repeat of that encouraging performance.

Tracey Waggott’s PAPARAZZI (3.00) can hit the headlines by landing the Bell Consolation Handicap.

The three-year-old has been building towards a big performance and shaped like his turn was near when second to the progressive Whinmoor at Haydock. AD LIBITUM (4.00) can claim a trappy renewal of the Cumberland Plate for Roger Fell. The three-year-old improved again when scoring over course and distance last time and can shrug off a 6lb penalty with further progress likely.

GAVOTA (4.30) can get her career back on track in the Listed EBF Eternal Stakes.

Roger Charlton’s filly flopped in the Fred Darling at Newbury when last seen in April but she is classy at best and can resume winning ways dropped in grade. POWER OF DARKNESS (3.40) can strike in the feature Molson Coors Handicap at Salisbury. Marcus Tregoning’s colt looked a nice prospect when landing a seven-furlong novice event here and can come on plenty up in class over a mile. Christopher Mason’s EDGED

OUT (2.40) rates a value bet in the veterans’ sprint.

The eight-year-old has a decent record at this venue and really caught the eye when a respectable third to Oeil De Tigre at Goodwood last time.

OBERYN MARTELL (3.10) can take another step forward for Eve Johnson-Houghton. The

Charm Spirit juvenile bolted up from Thriving over five furlongs at Sandown and is open to improvement over six.

DRILL (4.10) can lift the Bibury Cup for shrewd handler Luca Cumani. The Dansili colt recorded another career best when scoring at Chelmsford and is capable in today’s longer trip.

Withhold is reported to be thriving by Roger Charlton for Saturday’s Northumberland Plate at Newcastle.
