A staycation that’s got something for everyone

- BY ELAINE JOHNSTON

WHEN it comes to enjoying a short break in Scotland or some summer fun for all the family, there’s nothing like a great caravan holiday.

Throw in spectacular scenery, amazing beaches, fabulous entertainment and, of course, a bit of the Scottish summer heatwave, and you really can’t ask for any better.

Our road trip to Nairn ticked all the boxes. Nairn Lochloy Holiday Park sits right on the sea. A stunning six-berth Ambleside caravan was a cosy home from home for the week.

The three bedrooms, central heating, fitted kitchen and outside decking area had everything we needed for our great adventure – which started at the front door where a secret path took us through the dunes and out on to Nairn East beach. It was hard to believe we were still in XXXXXX xxxxxx Scotland, it felt like we’d been

Xxxx transported to a holiday abroad – the beautiful golden sands were a daily favourite for a walk, picnic, kite flying and the bucket and spade.

The campsite was spotless and had a friendly atmosphere. The on-site bar and restaurant at Lochloy had good value, tasty pub grub and snacks. Staff were helpful and informative and the entertainment team really put their all into making sure everyone was having a ball with daily activities for kids of all ages.

The nightly kids disco with the team mascots was fun. We even managed to bring home a best dancer certificate – and not for my “mummy-moves” but our eight-year-old daughter Charlotte’s great routine.

The site had easy access to the coastal footpath and town, shops and amenities. A short walk along the front there are parks and play areas, crazy golf and a brilliant ice-cream cafe.

If you fancy a day off-site, the Landmark Forest Adventure Park is a brilliant day out and only a 40-minute drive from Nairn. We’d heard about it and Charlotte couldn’t wait to give the ninja-style highline obstacle a go – and even convinced us to get harnessed up. But parents be warned, it’s really not as easy as it looks on TV.

The water slide, climbing, forest walk and land of illusion provide lots to do for a full day – and with the 30 per cent off voucher from the Lochloy campsite reception, it was reasonable value. We didn’t experience much queueing but be wary during weekends or high-season.

I had been to that same caravan park as a small child – it was lovely to revisit with my own family in tow.

As more of us decide on a staycation, we don’t automatically think of the north of Scotland as a holiday destination – but after a brilliant week of adventure and fun, Lochloy is now at the top of our list and it won’t be so many years in between next time around.
