Dad’s the way to do it for sprint star Dobbin

- BY MARK WOODS

BETH DOBBIN has revealed going for runs with former Celtic hero dad Jim as a kid put her on the fast track to sprint success.

With two Scottish records in the last month, the 23-year-old is in the form of her life ahead of her bid for 200 metres glory this weekend at the British Athletics Championship.

But she revealed it’s Jim, who played 12 games for Hoops in the 1980s, who taught her what it takes to reach the top in sport.

Dobbin said: “I remember him doing so much exercise around the house and I was probably about eight when I’d start going for runs with him.

“He taught me how hard you need to work in sport, even if there’s a bit of pain to push your body to its limits.”

While stopping golden girl Dina Asher-Smith in Birmingham might be tough, Dobbin has overcome a lot worse having battled back from suffering epileptic fits as a teenager.

Running was just a pipe dream until she came off the medication just three years ago – now a top-two finish would take her to August’s European Championships in Berlin.

She said: “Touch wood, it’s not returned. But I have to stay on top of things. I need my sleep.

“I have to watch my stress levels because they can trigger a seizure.

“I’d like to cut more off my times but the goal is to be at Euros.”
