Time to ring the changes
THE path of true love never did run smooth – a saying that is particularly relevant for the couples in this troubling documentary series about forbidden relationships.
Like the famous star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet – whose warring families kept them apart – the couples here are desperate for their families’ blessings.
The series so far has been both fascinating, emotional and occasionally shocking. One Mauritian mother, whose daughter is engaged to a white man, said: “I don’t mean to be racist, but obviously he’s white. We’re Asian. It’s simply not acceptable.”
Elsewhere, a gay man’s parents refused to accept their son’s plans to marry a man. His father spoke of his “horror” when he came out.
In this series finale, we follow 20-year-old Shane, who is planning to propose to his 37-year-old girlfriend Elaine.
Elaine’s family are opposed to the relationship due to the 17-year age gap but the couple throw an engagement party to try to win over the doubters.
Meanwhile, Junior plans to convert to Islam to marry his Muslim girlfriend Sobiah.
Raised in a devout Christian family, Junior is desperate to get his father’s blessing before the conversion so the wedding plans are on hold until they get his dad’s verdict.
And it is the wedding day of Chloe, 20, and Jack, 21 – despite accusations they are too young.
Chloe has finally got her mum on board. But will old tensions resurface on the big day?
